Unit Load Devices (ULDs) are the pallets and containers used to load cargo into aircraft, and they’re not one-size-fits-all – different aircraft types accept different ULD shapes. Getting this right at the planning stage avoids re-packing delays at the airport.

LD3

* Common Use: Narrow-body & wide-body lower deck
* Base Dimensions (Approx.): 156 × 153 cm
* Typical Aircraft: A330, B777, B787

LD7

* Common Use: Larger lower-deck cargo
* Base Dimensions (Approx.): 318 × 224 cm
* Typical Aircraft: B747, B777, MD-11

LD11

* Common Use: Lower-deck, mid-size
* Base Dimensions (Approx.): 318 × 153 cm
* Typical Aircraft: B747, B777

PMC (Pallet)

* Common Use: Main-deck / freighter cargo
* Base Dimensions (Approx.): 318 × 244 cm
* Typical Aircraft: Freighter aircraft

AKE

* Common Use: Narrow-body lower deck
* Base Dimensions (Approx.): 156 × 153 cm
* Typical Aircraft: A320, B737 (select variants)

Industry Insight

Cargo built to fit a specific ULD shape loads faster and reduces the risk of last-minute repacking at the airport

Freighter aircraft generally accept larger main-deck pallets (like the PMC) than passenger aircraft belly space allows

ULD weight limits matter as much as dimensions - overloading a ULD, even within its footprint, can prevent it from being accepted
